The Exorcist: Believer has been released to a lot of fanfare but has left viewers divided — with some saying the film was so scary it made them "s**t their pants" and want to "cleanse their eyes with holy water" while others dubbed it "boring as f***".

The new Exorcist film, which was released in cinemas on October 6, has been one of the most highly anticipated films of the 2023 Halloween season. The horror is a direct sequel to the original 1973 film, which was reportedly so terrifying it had viewers vomiting, fainting and leaving cinemas trembling.

It's the first movie in a rebooted Exorcist trilogy and is directed by David Gordon Green. The supernatural horror sees two girls disappear into the woods only to return three days later showing signs of demonic possession.

Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn returned to reprise her iconic role as Chris MacNeil, with one of the girl's fathers desperately turning to her for help. Moviegoers had hoped it would deliver the same petrifying thrill as the original, and some got what they wanted.

A second viewer wrote: "The new exorcist made me wanna scream cry and vomit all at once bro." A third added: "I watched the new exorcist and I couldn’t sleep last night LMAO ugh going to cleanse my eyes with holy water."

Someone else had a similar experience, saying: "I saw the exorcist last night and I couldn’t sleep when I got home." While another fan described it as "the craziest s**t I have ever seen."

One person even expected the film to be so terrifying they prepared themselves by wearing an adult nappy. Posting a series of pictures of themselves in the diaper, they wrote: "Ready for the day. Going to the movies; The Exorcist: Believer. I’m ready to get scared and p**s my pants, literally."

But other viewers were left sorely disappointed as they branded the new film "dull", "not scary" and "s**t". "The Exorcist: Believer — Boring as f***," one viewer concluded.

Another viewer agreed, adding: "The Exorcist: Believer is one of the most juiceless horror movies I’ve ever seen. Dull as hell, baffling story decisions, weak characters, and worst of all: not scary!"

Some said the film was so un-scary it was more like a comedy. One person wrote: "I saw the new exorcist tonight. it was so unsuccessful in being scary that it was quite funny!"

Others claimed it was so boring it even made them fall asleep. "New exorcist movie was so dumb & boring I fell asleep mid movie," one person wrote. Another said: "I went to see the new Exorcist on Friday night & damn near fell asleep in my seat."
