A headless body found washed up on a beach is believed to be an award-winning filmmaker who vanished almost two weeks ago.

Two-time Emmy winner Ross McDonnell, 44, was last seen leaving his Brooklyn, New York City home on Saturday, November 4, New York Police Department (NYPD) said. Now, cops believe that the dismembered corpse found at Breezy Point Beach in Queens could belong to McDonnell, as authorities await for DNA test results, a source told the New York Post.

The Daily Star reached out to NYPD on Monday afternoon which responded that "there are no updates at this time". A close friend of the Dublin-born filmmaker and photographer, Gene Gallerano, speculated to The Irish Times that his pal likely went for a dip in the ocean.

Just after midday on Friday (November 17) cops got the call out after a witness spotted a human torso, missing a head and its arms, on the southern Queen’s beach. While authorities couldn't immediately say how the person died, they believed they may have drowned in the rough waters, then had his body ripped apart by natural phenomena in the sea, sources told the New York Post.

The explicit cause of the person’s missing limbs has not yet been stated. Investigators have continued to look for clues linked to McDonnell’s disappearance, including his red vest, black and white trainers, khaki trousers and backpack.

The Irishman won an Emmy for his cinematography work on TV series The Trade in 2021 and documentary The First Wave in 2022. McDonnell also released his first film, Colony, at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the IDFA First Feature Award, according to IMDb.
