Hollyoaks star Ross Adams has said he's "so pleased" that the E4 soap revisited the forgotten romance between his character Scott Drinkwell and his first love John Paul McQueen.

A shocked John Paul (James Sutton) was taken aback after after Scott leaned in for a kiss, reciprocating a number of times before pulling away. Fans will know that the former Hollyoaks High deputy head teacher has been seeking advice from Carter Shepherd (David Ames), who has been inviting him to "self-help" sessions with a number of men .

The sessions in question, unbeknown to John Paul, are actually part of Carter's secret "conversion therapy" programme. John Paul set off to help Scott with his audition for the Christmas pantomime in recent scenes. Scott was as fabulous as ever as his alter ego Anita Tinkle, with John Paul having helped him sew the dress he was wearing for the part.

Little did they know, however, that Carter was watching from afar and snapped a picture, posting it anonymously online, suggesting that the two men shouldn’t be allowed to work at a youth club. After the audition, John Paul accompanied Scott back to his place, where he apologised for the way that he’d treated him when they were together many moons ago.

Caught up in the moment, Scott leaned in for a kiss, with John Paul reciprocating before apologising profusely and storming out, leaving Scott upset. Fans of the show know that John Paul is under the impression that he must resist temptation and sex due to Carter’s teaching and manipulation, and thus he was heartbroken that he'd disappointed Carter by kissing Scott.

Carter urged him to pray for forgiveness but John Paul soon came to realise that the head teacher was encouraging him to turn his back on being gay, as if it were some sort of choice. Asking him outright, John Paul quizzed Carter on if he’s practicing conversion therapy.

Opening up about the gripping storyline, Ross said: "Genuinely I am so pleased that they are revisiting Scott and John Paul’s romance. I feel like we all forget that John Paul was Scott’s first love, Scott lost his virginity to him, that’s big! We’ve never revisited it and I think they’ve been friends for a long time and it’s that classic thing isn’t it of when your first love is always quite special John Paul’s been kind and he’s been bigging Scott up about his audition to be the queen fairy in the fairy parade and I think Scott maybe clumsily misreads the signs like he always does and he goes in for a kiss.

"I think what’s really sad is that when we filmed those scenes, I was almost willing John Paul and Scott to get together because I do think they’re cute. However it’s not meant to be and John Paul runs off and leaves Scott feeling gutted because, I don’t even think it’s that Scott desperately wants to be back with John Paul, I think it’s just another example of Scott getting binned off by somebody, it’s quite sad really."
