A bodybuilder says he's judged for dating a transgender woman – but asserts he's not gay.

Jesse, who was raised in a strict Christian conservative household, faced a lot of judgement from his family when he hooked up with leggy blonde Cassidy.

“One thing I was definitely taught was that a [biological] woman is who you're supposed to be with, and if you're with anybody else you're going to be out of this household and out of this family,” he told the Love Don’t Judge podcast.

Cassidy said lot of people assumed that Jesse had to be gay and Jesse himself was a little confused about his feelings, early in their relationship.

He recalled: “Cassidy educated me, she said ‘No, honey you're straight – don't you see me as a woman?’ And I said yes, so she said "so where do you find the word gay?’

“That's when I realised I'm not gay at all. I’m an alpha male that’s attracted to femininity and that’s exactly what I got.”

The couple met through Instagram. “The first thing I saw was muscles,” Cassidy said. After messaging back and forth three or four times she revealed that she was a trans woman. Jesse told her “you don’t have to apologise for that, you’re just a special kind of woman”.

Cassidy has been subjected to a huge amount of online abuse since going public about her relationship with Jesse, very often from Christians who tell her to kill herself or claim she’s going to go to Hell.

She read out a couple of examples in her interview, with one troll saying: “Sir, lipstick and heels doesn't make you a woman. You can't change biology, you can't change chromosomes. You are just an insecure guy who didn't accept his body, so you did plastic surgery … keep living in your fantasy.”

She admitted that hateful comments like that do upset her, but is set on rising above them. The couple have reached out to Jesse’s family in the hope of building bridges.

Jesse's friend, Jordan, admitted that he "was very apprehensive and shocked” when he heard about the relationship. “It got blown up back here at home,” he said.

Jesse’s hoping that, in time, the rest of the tight-knit Christian community can also learn to love their neighbour, whoever they may be.
