A Premier League flop who cost Everton £25million has landed a new club – with a struggling side in the French second tier.

The Toffees have made a habit of wasting plenty of cash on players who failed to prove their worth, including on Jean-Philippe Gbamin. The midfielder joined the Toffees from German side FSV Mainz in the summer of 2019. He was one of six signings the club made during that summer’s transfer window.

However, a series of injuries restricted him to just eight appearances for the Goodison club. Gbamin had loan spells at CSKA Moscow in 2021/22 and in Turkey with Trabzonspor last season, and Everton were keen to offload the Ivory Coast international in the summer.

But with clubs unwilling to meet Everton’s asking price, his contract was cancelled by mutual consent. His agent, Bernard Collignon, recently claimed his player had walked away from a £5million salary by leaving Merseyside.

“It was not easy to cancel the contract with Everton. JP left a one-year salary on the table, worth £5m,” Collignon told the Guardian. “He didn’t take any money. The club had to wait until the end of the window to see if there was a club who wanted to buy him, but nobody wanted to pay Everton’s price, especially for a player that can sign [a pre-contract agreement] for free in January.

“We found the agreement of cancelling the contract 20 minutes before the deadline, at 11.40pm. Once the deadline is passed, you cannot cancel the contract in the same way.”

After a spell without a club, Gbamin is back in the game, although his new side is far removed from the bright lights of the Premier League. The 28-year-old signed for Ligue 2 side Dunkerque on a deal until the end of the season.

The northern France club are enduring a desperate campaign and currently sit second-bottom of the division with just nine points from 13 games. They visit bottom side Valcenciennes for a relegation six-pointer this weekend.
