One very lucky football fan, with very deep pockets, will be able to own a small-part of history as Lionel Messi's World Cup winning jersey is set go to auction.

It's been just under 12 months since Argentina and Messi conquered the world as they beat France in a World Cup final for the ages. And six jerseys worn by Messi in the tournament will now go to auction.

Messi's first-half shirts the final, semi-final, quarter-final, round of 16, and two of the three group stage matches will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York. The shirts will be on sale between 30 November and 14 December.

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to UNICAS Project, led by Sant Joan de Deu (SJD) Barcelona Children’s Hospital with the support of Leo Messi Foundation, to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases.

The collection is predicted to collect in excess of $10 million (£8million), making it the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia at auction.

There will be six shirts available to purchase

The current record auction for an item of sports memorabilia is Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals. The jersey, which was also auctioned by Sotheby's, fetched £8.1million in September of last year.

Messi's record at auction currently stands at £360,000 - courtesy of a shirt from the 2017 El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, where he scored an injury-time winner at the Bernabeu.
