In the description, the eBay seller described the "100% genuine 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin as a rare find". They added: "Good condition, circulated coin which is the rarest 50p in circulation."

It first started with a £10 price tag before shooting up to the hundreds in a matter of a few days. There were six bidders who were desperate to get their claws on the coin.

In the end, it sold for over 280 times its face value as the bidding war ended on November 13 this week. In the seven-week period, it garnered a lot of attention from coin collectors.

The Kew Gardens 50p coin is highly popular among Brits. Only 210,000 of these coins ever made it into circulation since its release date back in 2009.
