Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have been ongoing since 2014 when the Russia invaded Crimea in the south of the country.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24 2022. Prior to the invasion, Russian president Vladimir Putin, who sees Ukraine as historically part of Russia, announced in a televised address that a 'special military operation' would take place.
