We could be on the verge of alien Armageddon thanks to extraterrestrials who are billions of years more advanced than us and perhaps ready to wipe us out, an expert has warned.

Most boffins think the idea of UFOs, advanced alien species or an Independence Day-style invasion is a non-starter because they reckon any other life out there will be much more primitive than us. But one space whizz doesn't agree – and stressed that while we’re busy scanning the skies for other forms of life, it’s us who should be scared.

Professor Jane Breaves of the University of Cardiff believes there may be at least two other worlds in our own galaxy, orbiting stars 70 and 110 light-years away, where extraterrestrial life forms could be lurking. She says the planets are much, much older than Earth.

She told MailOnline: "These stars are much older than the sun (about 8 billion years older), which means any planets have had time to get less radioactive." She added it's "worth a look ASAP" to see if these rocky worlds really do exist – and if they do, there's a chance life up there "could pre-date that on Earth".

Professor Breaves, who’s just had her study published by the American Astronomical Society, said the two stars – the rather unsnappily-named HD 76932 and HD 201891 – could have "biospheres more advanced" than our own.

"The outlook seems very promising for finding rocky exoplanets with continents," she continued.

If there is more advanced life than us out there it would put us at a severe disadvantage if they wanted to toy with us – or just obliterate us. It would also beg the question as to why aliens haven’t shown much interest in us already. Perhaps they have and we just don’t know it – or perhaps we’re just so insignificant that they can’t be bothered with us.
