A Wizz Air passenger said she was left "stressed" and "holding back tears" after the airline sent her a text saying her flight was cancelled amidst the chaos caused by car park fire at Luton Airport today.
However, it turned out that her flight wasn't cancelled at all. The fire blazed from 9pm last night until 8.45am this morning leaving all flights before 3pm cancelled. Reporter Layla Nicholson had booked a flight to Lisbon for 6.25pm and the live trackers online stated that it would go ahead. However, she and her friend received a text from Wizz Air this morning saying that it was in fact cancelled.
Because of the conflicting information, Layla tried to find out whether the flight would go ahead but claims she found the advice confusing. Deliberating whether to pay for another flight or whether to go to the airport she says she was left "stressed" and unsure if her break away would go ahead.

The text she received this morning, seen by the Daily Star, stated: "Your flight from London Luton (LTN) is cancelled. We advise NOT to travel to the affected airport. Please check your email for further details. However, Layla never received an email and spoke to an agent on Wizz Air’s live chat instead. They said: "It wasn’t cancelled. If the flight will go ahead as planned depends on the decisions of the airport. We can rebook you for free if you want."
Speaking to Daily Star, Layla said: "I received a text from Wizz Air at 8:59am informing me that my flight from London Luton is cancelled. The text told me to check my email for further details. I continually refreshed my emails but could not find an email anywhere. After checking Luton Airport's X account for updates, I saw that only flights up until 3pm were cancelled."
Layla continued: "I then checked Wizz Air's website for the current flight status and it said it was on time still, so I then contacted the chatbot where I provided my flight number. They informed me that it was still on time. Just to double check I asked to speak to a human agent, the first was unhelpful.
"They told me to wait for further 'details' and instantly left the chat. This was absolutely bizarre considering they should be the ones providing the details.
"I think I connected to another human agent who told me that my flight has NOT been cancelled. Wizz Air also proves difficult to contact as their customer service line costs £1.45 which is just absurd! My friend who I am travelling with couldn't even get through at one point as the line was just dead.
"The text caused me a lot of stress and I would hate to think what my blood pressure reading was this morning. I've really been looking forward to getting away for a couple of days so I struggled to hold back the tears reading that text. The whole overall communication of Wizz Air really frustrated me, it shouldn't be that way."
Layla eventually headed to the airport and has since been informed that her flight is still going ahead. However it has been delayed until 7.30pm amid the chaos – and could be delayed further too.
A Wizz Air spokesperson this morning said: "Due to the unexpected fire at London Luton Airport multi-story car park, all flights are suspended until the afternoon of 11th October. All affected passengers who booked directly through Wizz Air will be contacted and provided updates via email and SMS. Customers who booked through a third-party should contact them for further information. Though the situation is beyond our control, Wizz Air apologises for any inconvenience caused and is doing everything in its power to minimise disruption."
In response to Layla’s complaint, a spokesperson for the airline added: "[Layla’s flight] is still scheduled for departure today, however alterations may still occur to today's schedule. All customers have been contacted to provide clarification on their flights. As the situation stabilises, we encourage customers to continue to check their flight status via updates from Wizz Air by email. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
This morning, the airport was shut down as firefighters tackled the blaze which appears to have destroyed hundreds of cars. Flights have been cancelled since the fire broke out at around 9pm and it was extinguished at 8.45am.
More than 15 crews from Bedfordshire Fire Service tackled the fire with local residents advised to close their windows to avoid the heavy smoke. It is believed that the fire – which has left cars and the car park charred and even melted – was caused by a diesel car.
